PROFILE

PROFILE OF THE PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR

Prof. G. Kumaresan is University First Rank holder in Bachelors and Masters. He got trained in M.D.Anderson Cancer Centre, Texas, USA, and further with a leading Cancer Genomics group at National Cancer Center, Singapore. Dr.Kumaresan has established a Cancer Genomics & Molecular Therapeutics Lab at School of Biological Sciences, MKU, and has completed many research projects from DBT, DAE, BRNS, ICMR, DST, CSIR, and UGC. His research involves integrative genomic investigation of the exhaustive genomic resources and develops workable hypotheses, which he further tests in human cellular models. Dr. Kumaresan has published 40 research papers in leading cancer biology and genomics journals. Dr.Kumaresan’s lab has a more extensive collection of human cell lines (50) and drugs (2000), and many investigations in the line of molecular and targeted therapeutics are in progress. He is also using genomic methods to understand the beneficial and off-target effects of drugs and to probe the drugs for repurposing. He has also established a consultancy set up to test the targets of drugs and drug candidates. Dr. Kumaresan has completed more than 10 Cancer Genomics projects and extensively exploited the Cancer Genomics Data to understand the Biology of Cancer and to seek Targeted Therapeutic knowledge, in the contexts of further translational investigations. He is exploring the genome-wide expression profiles of breast, gastric, and hepatocellular cancers by integrative functional genomic approaches. The intention of his work is the identification of suitable classes of drugs for a small subset of tumors. In large, the focus being translational genomics, personalized cancer therapeutics, and genomic medicine. Dr. Kumaresan’s research work in the genomic stratification of gastric cancer being supported by DBT as Unit of Excellence in Cancer Genomics from 2015 onwards.
